Blue Valentine

Everything And More...
What a film this was. The story spans over some year and is about a man and wife with marital problems. I don't really want to tell you anything more...just watch it. I just finished, and they said this film stings...boy does it. The acting, first off, is exquisite. The back and forth from past to present was perfectly placed throughout the film and the overall outcome is so heart-wrenching, it feels like you've been punched in the stomach. Awards season, here this film comes...

And The Soundtrack?
I want it.....soooooo bad. Whoever did the music deserves a medal.

Best Scenes:
1. The part where Ryan Gosling sings "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love"
2. The rest...

Excuse Me Michelle...
Michelle Williams seems to always play the role of a grieving wife/widow/cancer patient(Dawson's Creek) so maybe that's why she has this role down to a tee. It's not an insult, it's a compliment....or just an observation. I don't think I've ever seen her in a happy comedy role so maybe a future project...no, nevermind.

Best Lines:
1. Dean: "In my experience, the prettier a girl is, the more nuts she is, which makes you insane."
Cindy: "I like how you can compliment and insult somebody at the same time, in equal measure."
2. Dean: "I feel like men are more romantic than women. When we get married we marry, like, one girl, 'cause we're resistant the whole way until we meet one girl and we think I'd be an idiot if I didn't marry this girl she's so great. But it seems like girls get to a place where they just kinda pick the best option... 'Oh he's got a good job.' I mean they spend their whole life looking for Prince Charming and then they marry the guy who's got a good job and is gonna stick around."

Overall:
A wonderful and heartbreaking love story with spot on acting, singing, cinematography, directing and writing. It's so powerful, it out-shines most films I've seen this year and it's definitely going down as one of my favorites.

9.5 Stars.

Buried

Talk About Claustrophobia:
Ok so this movie is about a truck driver named Paul Conroy (the wonderful Ryan Reynolds), who is working in Iraq when his group of workers (who are actually trying to help over there) get blown up by "terrorists". He wakes up buried in a box with a lighter, knife, flashlight, some glowsticks, and a Backberry. The entire film takes place in actual time. Also the entire film takes place in the box so if you are claustrophobic, do yourself a favor and rent something else.

Unlike Other Movies Right Now:
As I've stated, this film takes place in actual time (like 24). I thought it was very well done and oh! beware of the crazy twist ending...gave me chills.

Best Scenes:
1. When Paul first calls a woman from the government and she knows his name....chills againnn.
2. The ending.

Let's Get Political:
In my opinion, this movie hits on a topic that is pretty right on. The film takes place in 2006 and even to this day, there are tons of POW over in Iraq and ransom videos like the one in this movie. Every one of their situations are different. Yet the government would rather just kill the terrorists and not care about the prisoners? On the other hand, it's tough to decide what the right action is unless you have had to make a decision like that which I, thankfully, haven't.

Best Lines:
1. Paul: "Yea, you're a terrorist you son of a bitch."
Jabir: "You terrified, so I'm terrorist"
2. Dan Brenner: "I'm so sorry, Paul."

Overall:
Yes, it is a little tough to watch and parts of it are left open, but in my opinion, it adds to the suspense and also, this movie is totally underrated. I enjoyed it and was definitely on the edge of my seat. It's nice to see something a little different for a change.

7.5/10 Stars.
Peace.

127 Hours

Hold On To Your Seat:
I just finished this wonderful vision of film making tonight at approximately 3:01 a.m. and I am still feeling the chills from the ending. Basically the entire movie is James Franco (hardly moving) alone, with a rock smashed on his right arm. He has hallucinations, and a (fake) little radio show moment (shot through his digital camera) and a small amount of tools to figure out a way to survive. Watching him look into the camera and talk about how sorry he is for not calling his mom back, and how he won't make it to his sister's wedding is heart wrenching. Annnnd this is a true story. Having said that, it is also one of the most well-acted one man movies I've seen since Castaway. No wonder the academy loves Mr. Franco.

Best Scenes:
1. The beginning when he meets two girls hiking the trail he's hiking.
2. All the digital camera scenes.
3. The ending (If your queasy you might want to look away)

It's Not An Action Movie:
So if you came to see one...go see Tron instead. This is a suspenseful character study and a journey into the life (and mind) of someone who went through a horrific experience. Believe me when I say it's pretty much a one-man movie. Also believe me when I say you shouldn't pass it up.

Best Line:
Aron: "You know, I've been thinking. Everything is... just comes together. It's me. I chose this. I chose all this. This rock... this rock has been waiting for me my entire life. It's entire life, ever since it was a bit of meteorite a million, billion years ago. In space. It's been waiting, to come here. Right, right here. I've been moving towards it my entire life. The minute I was born, every breath that I've taken, every action has been leading me to this crack on the out surface."

Hello Danny Boyle:
If you're a fan of his work, you will surely not be disappointed with this movie. He directed and co-wrote the screenplay for this movie and it is gooooooooood. Also if you are a nerd like me, you'll know who A.R. Rahman is (the guy behind Slumdog Millionaire's music) and you'll know he did the music for this movie as well. It's very good and....oh hey wait....oh hayyyy Dido! She's here too and her song is kinda the theme song for the movie.

Overall:
Go see it. It's worth a watch but be warned...it's claustrophobic and you watch a guy cut something off at the end so yea. Just trying to help a brotha out.

Heartless

Sooo what did you think of this movie Diana?
Ok, so the basic premise of this weird, semi-generic horror film is that a man named Jamie(Jim Sturgess who is hot with or without a heart shaped birthmark) sees these weird reptile like looking demons doing crazy shit all involving Molotovs and killing and blah blah. Then some horrible incident happens involving a family member. Then some weird biker looking guy comes along and promises a depressed/angry Jamie a life he wants without a birthmark on his face as long as he defaces property...of course...this guy is working with the devil, so he sits on a "throne of lies" (Thank you Will Ferrell) So Jamie has to kill some peeps in order to not be sacrificed over to the devil. Along the way, some other shit happens that makes no sense. There's a weird indian girl who has no real purpose other than to be the cheerleader for Jamie and the ending leaves you feeling like they just unraveled everything in 5 seconds. That's the ENTIRE movie. Now you don't have to sit through it...
You're Welcome.

Only Reason Why I Didn't Hate This Film:
The acting in some of the film is very good. There is a scene with Jamie and his new neighbor/friend at a bar, and they talk about the past. This scene, along with a few others were well done...shame the movie wasn't.

Best Scenes:
1. Above described bar scene.
2. The scenes with Jamie and his father.
3. The last scene with Jamie and his mother.

Attention Harry Potter Fans!
As I am a huge fan of H.P. as well, a few of the stars pop up in this useless film. One is Fleur (from Goblet of Fire), and one is Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall) who only comes in for a few minutes and out-acts practically everyone else....they should make him a lead in a movie sometime...Buchemi defied the odds so Spall can too =)

Overall:
It wasn't the worst of dumb horror films, but I have no desire to watch this one again...I guess if you are a well known director you get stars in your movie even if it does suck. Bad form Mr. Ridley...I'll stick with The Reflecting Skin.

4.5/10 Stars.
